Our Glossary

A comprehensive glossary document aids healthcare professionals in understanding and discussing liver disease, providing concise definitions and explanations of key terminology crucial for effective communication and patient care.

Introduction of new terminology for fatty liver diseases

A group of multinational liver societies and leading doctors have announced new terminology for liver diseases related to fat accumulation in the liver. The new names are for the diseases that have previously been called ‘fatty liver disease’; non-alcohol related fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and NASH.

Stigma

Stigma surrounding liver disease persists due to misconceptions about its causes. This hinders diagnosis, treatment, and support for affected individuals, perpetuating health disparities and social isolation. Education is crucial for combatting stigma.

Person First Language

Person-first language in healthcare emphasises referring to individuals as people before their medical conditions. It promotes respect, dignity, and a focus on the individual rather than their illness or disability.

NASH-CHECK tool

The NASH-CHECK is the only specific patient reported outcomes (PRO) measure in the NAFLD/NASH field. This PRO measure was recently created and validated in patients without cirrhosis. Some aspects included in the NASH-CHECK relate to symptoms such as pain, fatigue, itch, cognition, and sleep impact. These traits may impact daily activities, social interactions, and the mental well-being of patients with NASH. Overall, these symptoms and their effects can impact work productivity, ability to work, cost of medication, and cost of lifestyle management, thus having a negative economic impact.
